The Savoy Cocktail Book; Black and White Drawings to Illustrate Recipes

Project type

Illustrations based on the 1930's edition of The Savoy Cocktail Book by the London Savoy Hotel's Bartender, Harry Craddock. The original book had over 750 recipes. I chose to illustrate only 26 recipes to limit the amount of text as I had to hand-set it using metal type. This is an extremely time-consuming process as each word is constructed, letter by letter, and placed backward in a galley so it prints the right way round.

The protagonist, Alice, stumbles upon this mock-epic poem within a book that merely requires a mirror reflection in order to be read.
