Ancient Egypt. Abu Simbel is a temple constructed by Ramesses II (circa 1279-1213 B.C.E.) in ancient Nubia, intended to showcase his power and divine status. Four colossal statues, each standing 65 feet (20 meters) tall, sit in pairs flanking the entrance.
