A pivotal moment in Mary Shelley's novel 'Frankenstein', is when Victor Frankenstein 'creation' comes to life. This scene is often described as one of the most iconic in literature. Victor, consumed by his obsession to create life from death, has been labouring over his experiment for months. When the moment finally arrives and the creature is brought to life, Victor is initially ecstatic, but his elation quickly turns to horror and disgust of his creation. In the chaos of the moment, the confused and disoriented creature stumbles around the room. Grabbing frantically at Victor's coat, the creature catches sight of the notebook that details the process of his creation and reveals the circumstances of his existence and his creator's role in bringing him to life.
For the creature, this discovery is profound and transformative. It's the moment when he begins to grapple with questions of identity, purpose, and belonging. Learning about his creation and the abandonment he faces from his creator sets the stage for the creature's journey of self-discovery, and his eventual pursuit of Victor in revenge for the suffering he endures by his very existence. This scene not only serves as a turning point in the novel, but also raises profound philosophical questions about the responsibilities of creators towards their creations and the consequences of playing god. This notebook idea intrigued me and I started to think about what an anatomy student like Victor would have jotted down in it. Hence, the idea for ‘The Secret Journal Of Victor Frankenstein On The Workings Of The Human Body’ was born... so to speak.
